Have you ever wondered why Rhododendron is the national flower of Nepal? We have this ingrained in our memory since childhood that the Rhododendron is our national flower, but why? How? When? It’s even surprising that our curiosity about this very topic was never jolted.

Rhododendron (locally known as “Laliguras”) was officially declared the national flower of Nepal on February 1, 1962 ( 2019 B. S). By the late King Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah.  Rhododendron was chosen because it simultaneously embodies Nepal’s natural geography (Himalayan flora), cultural resonance across communities, aesthetic distinctiveness, and practical benefits for nation-building and conservation, making it a unifying, native, and symbolically rich national flower. It grows to a height of 20 meters as it blooms in astounding red, pink, or white flowers. It thrives between 1,400 and 3,600 meters, creating amazing red carpets at the lower altitudes that gradually turn pink and white as the altitude goes higher.

With that statement, gathered its very hard to paint a picture of Rhododendron, isn’t it? Did you know there are more than 30 species of Rhododendron here in Nepal? Literally speechless as we take in this information. We have seen pictures in our textbooks, maybe even photos and videos here and there, but will that do justice to our national flower if we don’t feel its glory with our own naked eyes? As we are all curious, let me guide you all to the very places where we can get the amazing landscape with luscious Rhododendron.

  • Where?
Depending on the region and elevation, different types of rhododendrons in Nepal are found, from the lush forests of lower altitudes to the high alpine zone.
  1. Annapurna Region: The trekking trail of Annapurna is filled with blankets of Rhododendron in areas such as Ghorepani, Ghandruk, and the Mardi Himal trek.
  2. Langtang Valley: A famous destination to view the pink and purple bloom of Rhododendron in Nepal alongside the snow-capped mountain view.
  3. Tinjure Milke jaljale trek: Well-renowned as the “Rhododendron capital of Nepal” as more than 30 types of rhododendrons in Nepal are found here, making it the ultimate destination for enthusiasts.
  4. Lower Everest Region: The lower Everest region and particularly the Pikey Peak Trail, has become an emerging rhododendron-viewing hotspot in Nepal.
  5. Makalu Barun Region: The Makalu Barun National Park is a faraway, remote, and untouched gem for those seeking solitude amid forests full of various rhododendron species in Nepal.
  6. Ruby Valley & Ganesh Himal Region: This is a spectacular trek in the Ganesh Himal range of mountains, passing through thick rhododendron forests between elevations of 2,000 and 3,200 meters. The area possesses greater biodiversity, and the rhododendrons here contain other alpine flowers that create a sensational colored mosaic during spring.
Shivapuri National Park: What if I were to say we can experience this beautiful carpet of Rhododendron right here in Kathmandu? Yes, Kathmandu, how awesome is that luscious splash of crimson Rhododendron right under our reach, far from the city noise. Shivapuri National Park, home to numerous flora and fauna, gifts us with the perfect sight to heal our souls. As I grew up right under the lap of Shivapuri, I have explored the Rhododendron bloom myself numerous times, and the adrenaline to go back again is always high.
  • When?
Amongst all four seasons, the spring season is generally considered the best time to witness the glory of the types of rhododendrons in Nepal, from March to May. During this period, the different types of rhododendron species in Nepal are in full bloom, turning the trails into vibrant and colorful landscapes. You wouldn’t wanna miss out on this experience. Hiking is the best way to take in the splash of memories home.

If you’re looking for a more relaxed way to soak in the rhododendron season with a guided hike, this spring join the special experience hosted by Prakriti Resort and Organic Farm.

Prakriti  Resort  &  Organic  Farm sits on the northern rim of Kathmandu Valley, right inside the Shivapuri  Nagarjun National  Park buffer zone. Its 20‑acre integrated permaculture farm and surrounding native forest create a natural stage for the spectacular rhododendron carpets that blanket the hills between  1,400 m  and  3,600 m  altitude.

This spring (March - April), the resort launched a “Rhododendron  Bloom  Escape” that blends guided hikes, wellness activities, and ecological learning. Guests hike or drive along forest trails where the native Rhododendron  arboreum bursts into vivid red flowers, forming a “red carpet” that stretches from the resort’s doorstep up into the higher ridges. Along the way, guides point out the plant’s role as a slope‑stabilising keystone species and its cultural importance as Nepal’s national flower.

The program also includes hands‑on workshops in the farm’s organic garden, where participants learn how to make rhododendron petal-infused tea with herbal properties, and the leaf mulch enriches soil and supports the resort’s zero‑waste cycle. Evening sessions feature storytelling about the flower’s symbolism in Nepali folklore and its appearance on the national emblem.

Because Prakriti’s operations are built on low‑impact design and community‑centered stewardship, the Rhododendron  Bloom  Escape offers a fully immersive, low‑footprint experience that lets visitors witness Nepal’s iconic blossom while supporting the very ecosystem that nurtures it. You can have a win-win experience here, being mesmerized by the beauty, with additional sustainable value.

If you want a fruitful experience of the Rhododendron bloom, escape the weekdays would be a much better choice. The paths would be less crowded, and you would get the view all to yourself, untouched, just there for you to encounter. If you are even a little bit curious why dont you trust the Rhododendron Blossom Escape and join in on the adventure with Prakriti Resort and Organic Farm.

Forget the typical tourist traps. If you want to see the Shivapuri trails actually painted crimson, you need to hit Prakriti Resort when the Rhododendrons decide to show off. These aren’t just pretty petals for your feed, they’re a hardcore medicinal powerhouse that locals have used for centuries to kick everything from fevers to gut issues. But here’s the reality: these forests are being trashed for cheap firewood and choked out by bad planning. By turning this bloom into a high-end tourism brand, we’re giving the “Lali Guras” a reason to be kept alive. It’s a win-win: you get an epic, red-draped escape, and the local community gets a real livelihood by ditching exploitation for organic farming and eco-guiding. Go for the views, but stay because you’re actually helping a local village protect its soul. So, what’s your choice? Are you ready?
